Many thanks to Timmy for his response here, which I'm digesting.
I'm coming back from a keynote address by Reza Aslan, a modernist/progressive Muslim who attempted to make a case for pan-Abrahamic unity of the three great Western faiths, in a spirit that I think Tim would applaud.
As I wondered if I bought the way in which Aslan smoothed over the various "pox on the unbelievers" doctrines within each of those religions and amplified the "we are all God's children" scriptures, it occurred to me that the real religious battle in every era is not between religions, but between exclusivists and inclusivists within every religion.
in terms of things inclusive vs exclusive, an interesting two month long series by emergent-y Christian types over here, specifically going over "issues of pluralism, ecumenism, the exclusivity/inclusivity of Christ and everything else that could fall under the broad category of plurality"...
It goes on with a new guest blogger per day or two...
Their hope with the postings:
"For many, words like pluralism have very negative connotations – it’s something that only pansy, milquetoast Christians believe in. For others, pluralism is simply the air we breathe and we just need to accept it. But perhaps there are other different ways to (re)think issues like these."
I'll be checking them out, and you may see a comment or two outta me over there.
