The person most outraged by the biases of others is the most biased of all. The person who most resents others bringing in outside agendas has the most elaborate agenda of all.
When we get the result we want, we assume the process was fair and thorough. When we don't get what we want, we become quite skilled at finding signs the process was corrupt. If we speak well of a process that favors our interests, we will denounce it as soon as it begins to favor the opposition.
In the end, the most corrupt process of all is our own insistence on getting our own way.
Join any roomful of people, and quickly come to see that your grandest passions or hopes or grievances are of minimal consequence to most others. Some seek foremost justice and equity for our world, others seek foremost freedom to the exclusion of all else, still others seek strict moral values.
And still we wonder how democracy leaves no one fully satisfied.
